Looks Good
I was always a bit worried that if the Hobbit was adapted to the screen it would be too much like the children's book and be too "immature" and far apart from the LotR, but this take is quite ideal. Still sticking to the original story but making it more fleshed out and serious. I'd love to see that at a cinema anytime!

Bard and speech of birds
I mostly agree with what you're saying (or at least see where you're coming from) but I wouldn't want to lose the history that's behind Bard understanding the speech of birds. I don't know how easy that is to keep in a movie, but in the book it was an important part of Bard. At least, that's the impression I received.

Anyway, good luck with your screenplay!

13 dwarves is to many
I think the number of dwarves in the party will have to be reduced significantly. It will be to cumbersome for a movie to have 13 different dwarves and be able to develop each character. Four or five would be perfect.

i think that the movie should be just like the lord of the rings. no childish sences and i think that u should but like legolas in it and strider and all the other people.

I LOVE THE LORD OF THE RINGS PLEASE TELL THE DIREXTOR TO MAKE ANOTHER

Why do we need a 'bridge movie'
While I really can appriciate the time, effort and skill you have put into this topic... quite amazing actually. Why do we need this so obvious 'cash cow' movie!

Unlike you I found Jackson's screen adaptations hollow, weak and badly written especially THE RETURN OF THE KING compared to TOLKIENS original novels. Oh Middle-Earth looked pretty and the darkness was there... but I'm afraid it was all smoke and light and he managed the ultimate in entertainment: He dazzled to deceieve and he did it brilliantly!

So again I say why do we need this 'bridge movie' - Jackson producing 'The Hobbit' ok fair enough he has his legions of 'blinded' fans, but the other movie is no more than an exercise in milking the works of a great man that Peter Jackson will never be able stand along side and history will remember TOLKIEN the write long after Jackson is gone.

Yours Sincerely

Steven Ritchie

I have a better version sequence
Simultaneous stories coming to a climax like what Jackson did with LOTR.
I.Fellowship to Departure
II.Rohan to battle
II.Gondor to battle

meanwhile the thread of Frodos journey is all thru.

So Hobbit I & II

I.Intro to being captured and freed by the Goblin king. (ie Goblin troubles is the climax of the party for movie I)
simultaneous with the buildup of Dol-Goldur
easily introduced by the frequent disappearing of Gandalf Up to the final preparations for battle w/ Galadriel, Elrond, and Celeborn (or whatever his name is)

II.pick up where they left off ala Two towers movie
lead into the conquering of smog and the battle of 5 armies as climax and sob story ending like ROTK.
simultaneous but ending before smaug sequence is the battle of Dol-Goldur

I also suggest leaving beorn as a minor point or stop along the way. w/ major events in I being trolls, spiders, goblins

The other idea I have is to shift the two tracks a bit from my original to have the climax be battle of DolGoldur simultaneously with Bilbo finding the ring and golum leading him out. Movie two would then pick up the two tracks where those leave off.

Additions
The focus on human and non-human characters is a proper focus for the story line.

Adding a bit of color and depth to the story line might also help. Much of the success of LotR was due to the background scenery. Mountains, lakes, flowers and the like always help background.

There and Back Again
Duncan,

Your adaptation of Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is quite admirable, however, the problem with bring any adaptation to the screen is time. Fitting the whole of the story into approximately 2 hours of film.

Thus your whole prologue and opening should be summarized in story form as Cate Blanchett did in the beginning of LOTR. The film should actually start with Bilbo already finishing his breakfast, grabbing his enormous pipe, and walking outdoors to see Gandalf walking up. Bilbo should then say his, "Good Morning," and Gandalf should reply with his, "What do you mean?"

Well what about a remaking of the lord of the rings films and redoing of the story?
I have always thought that not enough detail went into lord Of the rings and that in turn after the hobbit movie they should remake Lord of the Rings and make it longer thers not enough detail I think! That jackson should direct it again and work much harder!!
