The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins’ adventures, departing from his peaceful green home in the Shire to embark on a daring quest into JRR Tolkien’s fantasy world of dwarves, elves, orcs and a ferocious dragon.
The recent exciting news is that The Hobbit is to be brought to the big screen. Adapting Tolkien’s classic presents some interesting challenges for the filmmakers. Should the film be faithful to the children’s fairy-tale style of the original? Or should the story be revised to appeal to the adult audience who enjoyed Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films?
I believe the core story and themes of The Hobbit should be respected, but some minor changes to the plot could curb the more childish elements and greatly improve the film for Lord of the Rings fans. The following sections discuss key aspects of my proposed adaptation:
